Ever hear the phrase, “Oh he/she is a born leader.”
Barry Posner and James Kouzes in their book “Learning Leadership” make the counter argument that you can actually master these five traits to be a good leader.
1. LEADERS ARE CONSTANT LEARNERS
We read about Bill Gates being a prolific reader. He reads about 52 books a year, but it is so important to him to always be learning. You never know when you’re going to learn a paradigm or you’re going to learn a tactic and something that’s completely tangential to what you do, but you can actually apply it in the vertical in which you operate.
2. GOOD LEADERS KEEP AN EYE ON THE FUTURE BY OBSERVING THE PRESENT.
We’re slated to interview Sandra Campos, CEO of Diane Von Furstenberg, on April 15th if everything goes as planned and in this current environment. She would tell you that about 40% of her meetings are focused on how she can take a legacy company and continue to make it digitally relevant. She’s got to be able to keep playing to the millennials, Gen Z and the next generation behind them. DVF can’t be a brand that’s reliant on the folks that were buying wrap dresses back in the 70s. It just wouldn’t be able to continue to make money that way. Good leaders are not only paying attention to the present, but they’re thinking about what’s coming up ten clicks down the line.
3. GOOD LEADERS CHALLENGE THEMSELVES
Leaders are people that challenge themselves every year. I host an extreme sports challenge, but it’s really a metaphor. July 11th, we are hosting a Surfing Retreat in the Rockeaways for women. Last year was trapeze school. The year before was Skydiving!
But what I am really doing? I’m pushing you outside of your comfort zone so you can see what’s possible for you. Not only in that context, but what else is possible for you in your business context and your personal life context.
4. GOOD LEADERS HAVE SUPPORT NETWORKS
The next trait of a good leader is that they build strong support networks. This piece is really what I’m after everyday with LadyDrinks. I am putting you in the room with like-minded professional women that are already culturally attuned to what you’re up against. Now, let’s get to the deeper conversations quicker. Who will the women you cherry pick from that room at that event to become your support system. Who will become your support systems for success.
5. GOOD LEADERS KNOW HOW TO TAKE FEEDBACK
Good leaders are great at getting feedback. They learn to integrate feedback into their behaviors. They also create spaces where it’s okay and safe to provide feedback.
I really love this book because you don’t have to be a born leader. It’s actually something that you can learn. It is learning Wednesday and it’s also learning Friday, Friday we are hosting a virtual workshop on how to step into the spotlight as a business owner and really, really make it a service driven effort and not an ego-driven effort. In other words, you’re going to market, you’re educating the target market that you want to help and how you want to help them.
